    • Wedding Bliss After 65 Years of Marriage

    • After 65 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Frances Jefferson renewed their vows on March 16, 2007 at 7pm. The ceremony took place at their youngest daughters home in Tucson, Arizona. Approximately 45 guests attended, including close friends and family, to witness the joyous occasion. A priest from the Jefferson's beloved Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church conducted the ceremony and mass followed by appetizers and champagne.

Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson met in Tucson, Arizona in 1942 at the Sword and Key Club. In attempts to get noticed, Mr. Jefferson would jump off a 30 foot diving board cannon ball style into a swimming pool and splash Mrs. Jefferson. It worked. At that time Mr. Jefferson was in the airforce and was stationed in California. Two weeks after meeting each other, Mrs. Jefferson packed up her car and drove to California to be with her love. During those days the roads were not paved and it was not lady-like to drive far distances. This did not stop Mrs. Jefferson. They were married 3 months later. Now with 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren they renew their vows to one another.

The wedding ceremony and mass was momentous. First, the house filled with voices singing "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound". Then passages from the bible were read aloud by family members followed by the exchanging of vows. Witnessing two people so much in love after 65 years was a gift in itself. Mrs. Jefferson looked radiant in her hot pink knee length dress while she recited and received her vows. Mr. Jefferson appeared very proud as he looked at his wife and at everyone in the room whom they love and are connected to. Next the priest led us in Holy Communion followed by statements made by their children and their spouses regarding the impact that their marriage and love has had on them.

After the final prayer, it was time to celebrate. Appetizers and champagne filled the rooms. The appetizers included a cheese plate with crackers and veggie plates. This was perfect considering we all ate before the ceremony. Champagne was poured into flutes that had the names of guests of honor and the date on them. A two-tiered wedding cake with little hearts was cut and distributed. The main topic of discussion was how happy and grateful everyone was to be together.

Although I was brought into the Jefferson family by the marriage of my mom to my step-dad, I have never felt like an outsider. This is because of the wonderful family values that Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson have instilled in others. I am honored to have witnessed the exchanging of vows after 65 years of marriage. party
